Winback Covert Operations

WinBack: Covert Operations is a 1999 Nintendo 64 action game developed by Omega Force and published by Koei, widely credited as one of the earliest console titles to implement a dedicated cover system — a mechanic that would later define the third-person shooter genre. Jean-Luc Cougar moves through a series of military installations, leaning out from cover to fire and retreating before enemies return shots.

The player hitbox compresses from 48 to 12 pixels while in cover, making it significantly harder for enemies to land shots during defensive positioning. The GULF section contains a 3-frame laser roll bypass — rolling at the precise frame during laser activation passes through the beam without registering a hit — which is the defining technical skill for players pushing for clean no-damage clears.
