History of Puzzle Video Games
One of the earliest known puzzle video games is the Heiankyo Alien that was released for the PC-8001 and various arcade systems back in November 1979. The innovative game became the precursor to many puzzle action titles such as the more popular Lode Runner that was released for the NES console in 1983. During those years, many puzzle games were released throughout various gaming consoles, but it was not until in the early 90s that puzzle games became more refined. By February 1991, Lemmings was released. This game requires the player's quick thinking as the mindless creatures (known as the titular Lemmings) will literally just walk into deadly situations without the player's assistance. And in 1994, Japan popularized Mahjong video games that caught the attention of many players in and out of the country.
After the release of many successful titles like the 2012 Candy Crush Saga developed by King and the 2007 video game Portal by Valve, Puzzle Games had easily become one of the largest gaming genres on multiple platforms to date.
Elements of a Puzzle Game
Puzzle Games come in all shapes and forms. However, they all include one or more of the following elements in their core gameplay:
- Manipulating objects and applying knowledge of the rules to get the desired result.
- Matching objects based on their similarities or categories (e.g. color, shape, pattern, etc.).
- Memorizing patterns and relaying them perfectly.
- Solving simple or complex patterns under a time constraint.
- Solving puzzles with increasing complexities based on previous challenges.
