History of Matching Games
Games that use the match-and-remove mechanic goes way back from the beginning of human history. The characteristics of Matching video-games can be attributed to non-digital games including Mahjong and Solitaire (both be traced back to the 18th century). Tetris was one of the earliest examples of tile-matching video game. The game was released by Alexey Pajitnov in 1984 and was well received by the general public. This revolutionary game inspired the creation of many similar games and was hailed as one of the best-selling video game franchises of all time.
Another early example is the game called Chain Shot! that was released back in 1985. Created by Kuniaki Moribe, this game was later rebranded as SameGame. Although SameGame was less popular than Tetris, it's game mechanic was adapted and was carried over by the games today.
