Secret of Mana is a 1993 SNES action RPG developed by Squaresoft. Three companions — the Boy, the Girl, and the Sprite — travel together to stop an empire from harnessing the power of Mana. Combat plays out in real time: you attack, then wait for a power gauge to refill before striking again. Weapons, magic, and items are all accessed through the game’s signature ring menu, which pauses the action and lets you make decisions without breaking the flow of movement.
Each of the eight weapon types levels up independently as you use it, and magic is tied to eight elemental spirits found throughout the world. The game originally supported two-player simultaneous co-op via the SNES Multitap, letting a second player control one of the companions directly — a feature that made it a standout RPG for couch play at the time.
